Paper pools

The paper pools emerged from a desire to use other media besides oil and from experiments in trying to create 'the pattern' – that lattice of light on the bottom of an outdoor swimming pool or Lido – without always having to work from a photo. It helps to have a story in mind during the process of creating the figures, so I name each paper pool after a character. They might be swimmers I have observed at the lido, famous Hollywood couples, or even Victorian novelists. You never know who’s swimming. The ones pictured here are sold but some pools are always available from Studio 73 in Brixton Village, £120 unframed, £200 framed.

You in the picture

I also do paper pool commissions. Choose your pose, swimsuit, hat and type of blue background. I can even base it on a picture of you. Email me to discuss details or an idea for your own pool.

Mixed media

They are a combination of watercolour and coloured pencil, then collaged together – part painting, part drawing. The figures are imagined.
