About the artist
I am primarily an oil painter. I paint swimmers and swimming pools - especially open-water pools. This subject allows me to explore the themes of light and darkness - the light in a outdoor lido can be specactular - and explore that flickering line between illumination and despair. Swimming figures can often seem vulnerable and alone but also free and floating in space. But it is the light which gives them their emotional resonance. And this is what I love to paint.
I also celebrate the unique space which is Brockwell Lido, a wonderful and beloved art-deco treasure in South London, built in 1937 and saved by a dedicated few in the 1980s - for the whole community to still enjoy. A very special place.
